WHERE WE LIVE
Belfast (or Béal Feirste
in Gaelic) is the capital city of Northern Ireland and is also the
largest city. It sits at the end of Belfast Lough at the mouth of
the River Lagan. There are now five cities in Northern Ireland.
Armagh, Belfast and Derry have been cities for many years, Lisburn
and Newry are our newest cities.
Northern Ireland has a population of about one and a half million,
a third of who live in or around Belfast.
Nearly all of us live in houses in villages, towns and cities,
but do you know what sort of house you live in and what it is made
from?
Most houses are made out of bricks, with a roof of tiles or slate.
If the roof is a dark grey colour it is probably slate, if it is
red or brown it is probably tiles. Look at the house where you live
and work out what it is made from. Think about all the different
materials used to build it, like brick, wood, metal, glass and plastic,
and where they came from.
