ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Energy efficiency means using energy as wisely as possible. For example, using an energy efficient light-bulb instead of a normal bulb will give us more light and use less electricity. It uses less energy to do the same job.

We should all try to be more energy efficient at home. One of the main ways we can do this is by looking at how we heat our homes. They can be heated in different ways, such as:

Coal Fires
Central Heating (electricity, gas, coal or oil)
Electrical Heaters
Gas Fires and Heaters

However we do it, we can keep the cost down, use less energy, cause less pollution and stay comfortable by controlling the heat properly.

Look at this picture of a home and see if you can spot the places where they are losing energy. There are SIX to find. When you think you've found one, roll the mouse over that part of the picture to see if you are right.

SparkyOkay, I've got some great tips for you so that you can help to save energy at home.

Sparky Telly Time - When you've finished watching TV switch it off at the plug. When a TV is switched off with the remote control it still uses about 25% of the energy it would if it was switched on.

Sparky A Bit Chilly - Try not to leave the fridge door open for longer than necessary. Each time you open it, the fridge takes time to cool down again (and this uses energy).

Sparky A Break From The Dishes - If your mum or dad is using a dishwasher, tell them to use a low temperature setting if it has one. Plus don't turn it on until you have a full load.

Sparky Gadgets - If you need to charge up your new Christmas toy or mobile phone, try not to leave the charger switched on longer than you have to. Switch it off at the plug when you are finished.

Sparky Something Brewing - Whenever your mum or dad are making a cup of tea tell them to only boil enough water for the number of cups they need. Lots of people boil a whole kettle full of water just for one cup, and that is a waste of energy and money.

Sparky Brand New - If mum or dad are buying a new appliance like a fridge or washing machine check to see if the new one is energy efficient. There is usually a sticker on them to tell you.
