SOME THINGS TO TRY FOR YOURSELF

1. Hand Rubbing

A very easy way for you to see how energy can change from one type to another is to rub your hands together really fast, and keep going for as long as you can.

How do your hands feel? Warm, cold, or hot.

Do you know what type of energy that movement is? Mechanical, chemical, or electrical.

2. Balloon

If you blow up a balloon you use energy to do it, and that energy gets transferred to the balloon as potential energy. That means the balloon is storing the energy. The balloon has the potential to do something...

a) If you let go of the balloon before you tie it, what happens? It flies all around the room. You released the potential energy to create the mechanical energy of the moving balloon.

b) If you let the air out but hold on to the balloon so that it makes a squeaking noise you can turn the potential energy into sound energy.

c) If you tie the balloon to stop it from going down, can you think of a way to release the energy really quickly to make sound energy?
